Open Air laboratories

In 2014 in the Matschertal/Val di Mazia in Venosta has been established a research site of the international long-term ecological research network (eLTER). In this open air laboratory continuous monitoring and recording of biotic and abiotic parameters allow scientists to observe climate and land-use changes over a long-term period.

In 2026 at Kohlern/Colle near Bolzano has been established the marteloscope as part of the European Forest Institute network(EFI). This open air laboratory serves for basic research and long-term studies on forest biodiversity and forest ecology, as well as a training ground for students, forestry professionals.
