Our Accelerated Life Testing Laboratory offers state-of-the-art facilities to evaluate how materials, components, and photovoltaic (PV) modules perform and age when exposed to harsh and rapidly varying environmental conditions. Through controlled climatic and irradiation cycles, our chambers provide accelerated ageing under multiple environmental stressors, allowing the identification of degradation mechanisms and performance losses.
Several climatic chambers simulate accelerated lifetime cycles to reproduce degradation processes under controlled temperature, humidity, irradiation (including UV), and rain conditions. Aging tests not only allow verification of the product robustness but can also be used to assess the reuse potential of components in compliance with circular-economy principles, studying degradation mechanisms and structural integrity after accelerated ageing cycles.
Our climate chambers are primarily used for testing photovoltaic components and modules, but they can also be used to support partners in the development and improvement of other industrial products.
Climatic chambers
Our laboratory is equipped with several chambers capable of reproducing complex and repeatable environmental stresses.
Angelantoni PV4500 climatic chamber
- Internal volume: 1.3 × 1.5 × 2.2 m

WeissTechnik ClimaEco Chambers
- Internal volume: 0.75 x 0.58 x 0.765 m
- Temperature range: from -70 to 180 °C
- Relative humidity: from 10 to 98 %

Q-SUN Xe-3 xenon arc irradiation chamber
- Sample tray area: 451 mm x 718 mm
- Irradiance from 75 to 125 W/m2 in the UV range, temperature control
- Full‑spectrum Xenon lamp
- Combined UV + humidity + rain aging test
UWAVE UV-LED irradiation chamber
- Sample tray area: 350 mm x 683 mm
- 4 high intensity UV LED families covering the UV portion of the solar spectrum
- Up to 200+W/m2

Together, these facilities create accelerated ageing pathways using multiple environmental stressors, supporting durability assessment, material comparison, and circular economy evaluations.
Environmental testing of photovoltaic modules and components
The Angelantoni PV4500 chamber can accommodate up to 10 photovoltaic modules, enabling complete environmental test programmes compliant with international standards, including IEC 61215. These tests reproduce stresses equivalent to years of operation, revealing potential failures and performance degradation at an early stage. In addition to photovoltaic modules, it is possible to test building products, plastic and polymeric materials, electrical and electronic components, automotive parts and other industrial products subject to variable environmental conditions.
Expert support for industry and collaborative R&D
Our testing services can be integrated into broader collaborations between Eurac Research and industrial partners — from component testing to market ready product optimisation, including prototype development.

Accelerated ageing tests allow evaluation not only of material resistance, but also the behaviour of connections, which affect the possibility of selective separation and reuse. This information makes it possible to define end-of-life scenarios and design more circular solutions, optimizing connections and fastening systems to facilitate disassembly and recovery.
