From 23 to 25 October, researchers from the Center for Climate Change and Transformation joined the SISC25 conference in Rome, presenting work on participatory adaptation planning and data-driven tools for climate risk management.
Participatory adaptation planning in South Tyrol
In one of the conference sessions, Fabio Carnelli presented the process and outcomes of the Adaptation South Tyrol project, commissioned by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano/Bozen. The project developed a six-phase framework for the co-design and co-development of South Tyrol’s climate adaptation strategy. This participatory approach led to 238 sectoral and 35 cross-sectoral strategic recommendations for climate adaptation.
The process engaged 29 Eurac researchers and involved over 100 stakeholders from public institutions, economic sectors, and civil society, ensuring that the resulting strategy reflects the region’s diverse needs and priorities. The work presented at SISC25 illustrated how inclusive, science-based processes can strengthen regional adaptation planning and implementation.
Digital tools for risk management
Piero Campalani presented the X-RISK-CC project, which focuses on the development of innovative digital tools for the mapping and analysis of extreme events. Among these outputs, the project has produced a portal on extreme events, designed to improve data accessibility and support evidence-based risk assessment in Alpine regions.
By integrating multi-risk data and enhancing collaboration between researchers, policymakers, and civil protection authorities, the portal aims to make information on climate-related hazards more transparent and actionable.
