EERA-EUREC Workshop in Cyprus: managing intermittency in vulnerable electricity systems

The next 21 May EUREC (Association of European Renewable Energy Research Centres, EERA (European Energy Research Alliance) and PHAETHON Centre of Excellence, will gather in Cyprus for a common workshop with the title “Achieving the 2030 targets in line with the long-term strategic objectives of the energy transition that capture the aspirations of the Green Deal and REPowerEU: What it means to island Cyprus using the experience of more mature markets?” .

Among the participants also the Ministry of energy of Cyprus, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of the Environment, CERA, TSOC, DSO of Cyprus, EAC, Association of RES, Association of Competitive market, and the Technical Chamber of Cyprus.

Coordinators Jorge Joven (CIRCE) and Venizelos Efthymiou (PHAETHON) led the 4th Open Discussion on the use of flexibility resources to manage intermittency in the vulnerable electricity system of Cyprus. Wolfram Sparber (EUREC and Eurac Research) moderates the first two open discussions about Cyprus’ energy transition and the lessons learned from the operation of the electricity market in EU and how these can help Cyprus to initiate operation smoothly. Prior to the workshop, the group discussed EUREC internal aspects and visited an eolic park and other energy infrastructures in Cyprus.

The event highlighted the importance of flexibility resources in supporting Cyprus's electricity system, ensuring sustainable energy management amid intermittency challenges.
