Eurac Research contributes to EU report shaping the future of digitalisation and AI in energy

The report provided the analytical foundation for the European Commission's Strategic Roadmap for Digitalisation and AI in the Energy Sector, adopted on 3 June 2026 as part of the European Technological Sovereignty Package.
Marco Cozzini co-authored Task 4 of the report, which addresses the coupling of data centres with district heating networks for waste heat recovery, as well as flexibility in the electricity sector, two issues at the centre of the EU's approach to integrating the growing energy demand of digital infrastructure into a sustainable and resilient power system.
Matteo Prina took part as a reviewer, focusing on the report's section on foundation models for the energy sector. Commenting on his contribution, he said: "Although my role in the project was as a reviewer, it was a very interesting opportunity to contribute to the report by reviewing and discussing the section on Foundation Models for the energy sector. In particular, I contributed by providing feedback on how foundation models can support the energy transition, highlighting both their potential applications (e.g. knowledge management, operational support and decision-making) and the challenges related to their adoption, such as data quality, trustworthiness, interoperability and integration with existing energy systems. I believe the report is particularly valuable because it provides a strategic overview of how digitalisation and AI can support the European energy transition, combining technical, market and policy perspectives. It is intended for policymakers, regulators, energy companies, researchers and other stakeholders involved in shaping the future digital energy ecosystem."
The ENTEC2 report brings together contributions from more than 140 experts across Europe and covers cost-benefit analysis, market analysis, foundation models, and data centre flexibility and heat reuse, alongside the results of an open public consultation.
