BIPV meets history

EU ITA-CH BIPV meets history - Competitive value chain for viable BIPV in building renovation

The project is carried out by EURAC Research (Italian project leader) and by the University of Applied Sciences of Italian Switzerland - SUPSI (Swiss project leader), and the Lombardy Region. A wide partnership of excellence, quality and innovation in the industrial sector in the Canton of Ticino completes the network, linking to the photovoltaic supply chain with companies such as SUNAGE and Solar Retrofit and with regional institutions such as the TicinoEnergia Association, that works in support of energy policy making, operating in the energy efficiency and renewable energy sectors.

Design criteria for the integration of active solar technologies in the historic built environment: Taxonomy of international recommendations

The paper focuses on architectural integration of active solar technologies (photovoltaic and solar thermal systems) in the historic built environment. Interpreted and used as a building material in the envelope, they are able to positively support energy transition and to contribute to climate change mitigation without compromising the original typological-functional characteristics. Their integration is fostered by innovative architectural design, aesthetical appeal, flexibility, multi-functionality, cost reduction, and technological development. Moreover, they can enhance economic value, functionality, and human comfort of buildings. Despite these advantages, there is a social diffidence on their acceptability due to policy, design, technical, economic and information barriers. To overcome these issues, the paper aims at identifying shared design criteria for their integration in the historic built environment, through a detailed assessment of 44 international guidelines. The study develops a taxonomy of international recommendations on energy efficiency, microgeneration, and solar integration, missing in literature so far, by analysing and comparing recurring criteria and recommendations. Also, a glossary of the most important terms according to the aesthetic, technical, and energy integration levels is created. Thus, the research defines an innovative framework of reliable design criteria, and a shared vocabulary to promote active solar technologies integration in the historic built environment.

Opaque Coloured Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV): A Review of Models and Simulation Frameworks for Performance Optimisation

Coloured building integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs) may contribute to meeting the decarbonisation targets of European and other countries. Nevertheless, their market uptake has been hindered by a lack of social acceptance, technical issues, and low economic profitability. Being able to assess in advance the influence of the coloured layers on a module’s power generation may help reduce the need for prototyping, thereby allowing optimisation of the product performance by reducing the time and costs of customised manufacturing. Therefore, this review aims at investigating the available literature on models and techniques used for assessing the influence of coloured layers on power generation in customised BIPV products. Existing models in the literature use two main approaches: (i) detailed optical modelling of the layers in the module’s stack, including coloured layers, and (ii) mathematical elaboration of the final product’s measured characteristics. Combining the two approaches can provide improved future models, which can accurately assess every single layer in the module’s stack starting from measured parameters obtained with simpler equipment and procedures.

Photovoltaic potential estimation of natural and architectural sensitive land areas to balance heritage protection and energy production

The study aims at defining a methodology for estimating the photovoltaic potential of natural and heritage sensitive land areas, balancing heritage protection and energy production thanks to the involvement of Public and Heritage Authorities. This method is applied to the Como Land Area (Italy) for verify its feasibility in territories with heterogeneous morphologies, landscapes, and constraints. First, “urban area typology” and their “recurring buildings typologies” are identified using local sources and tools with the support of the Public Authorities for considering similar shapes, features, materials, roof geometries, and orientations as well as future policy developments. Then, heritage-compatible photovoltaic technologies and suitable surfaces are selected for one “recurring buildings typology” respecting original appearance, values, and meanings thanks to the enquires with the local Heritage Authority. Considering these recommendations, the photovoltaic potential in covering energy and building needs is estimated considering the impact of urban geometries, self-shadings, heritage and territorial constraints. Energy profiles are generated using stochastic models calibrated to include occupant diversity and cultural factors. An average index for the photovoltaic potential reduction due to the heritage-compatibility is found respectively of 21% and 16% compared with the maximum theoretical potential achievable in the building envelope and in the roof.

Social acceptance of photovoltaic systems in heritage buildings and landscapes: Exploring barriers, benefits, drivers, and challenges for technical stakeholders in northern Italy

This study investigates the factors influencing the social acceptance of photovoltaic (PV) systems in heritage contexts. It aims to identify barriers, potentials, drivers, and challenges for the widespread adoption of PV technology while considering heritage conservation, land preservation, energy production, and climate mitigation. The research focuses on Italian technical stakeholders in the construction sector, including Heritage and Public Authorities, designers, and energy consultants. The survey delves into their opinions and perceptions of PV technologies, emphasizing both building and urban integration, as well as landscape integration. Noteworthy aspects of this study include its originality in addressing PV integration on heritage buildings and landscapes, the specific targeting of technical groups, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the timing of data collection during the Covid-19 pandemic and pre-energy crisis period for potential comparisons. The study finds that in heritage contexts, the acceptance of PV systems is driven by economic and aesthetic benefits. Respondents value the enhancement of historical buildings and landscapes, as well as discreet PV integration. For historic buildings, benefits include reuse of old buildings, pleasure aesthetics of innovative PV, and cost reduction for energy use. For protected landscapes, benefits include security of abandoned areas, unobtrusive PV integration, and production of renewable energy. Cultural concerns, particularly the risk of impacting historical and natural identities, are the main barriers to acceptance. Lack of knowledge about PV technology is not a significant issue. These findings emphasize the need to address cultural and aesthetic considerations when promoting PV integration in heritage settings.
