Citizenship, Plurilingual Education, Values and Engagement through a Responsible use of AI
CLEVER-AI is a European cooperation project under Erasmus+ (KA220-HED) that aims to foster a critical and ethical integration of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in language education and plurilingualism. The project brings together six higher education and research institutions from France, Ireland, Austria, Belgium, Italy, each with strong expertise in digital education, language didactics, and plurilingualism.
Objectives:
CLEVER AI seeks to:
- Deepen understanding of how language learners and teachers use GenAI;
- Describe the skills required for a critical and ethical use of GenAI in language and plurilingual education;
- Equip teachers with the knowledge and tools to integrate GenAI into the development of action-oriented, linguistic and plurilingual competences;
- Promote critical and ethical GenAI use in language teaching, learning, and language use in general.
Activities:
The project will:
- Conduct two large-scale European surveys to investigate perceptions and practices of GenAI among secondary and university-level language learners and their teachers;
- Develop a comprehensive competence framework for action-oriented, linguistic and plurilingual skills, specifically addressing GenAI;
- Create a pedagogical framework and a suite of adaptable teaching materials to foster these competences through critical GenAI use.
Expected Results:
CLEVER AI will deliver:
- A research report on GenAI perceptions and practices in language education;
- An expanded competence framework that incorporates action-oriented and plurilingual dimensions through critical GenAI use;
- An open-access book and a collection of pedagogical resources;
- Broad dissemination of critical and ethical GenAI practices for language learning, teaching and plurilingualism.
Impact:
The project will directly benefit language teachers (current and future), teacher trainers, and, indirectly, language learners across Europe. By providing research-based frameworks and practical resources, CLEVER AI will support the digital and plurilingual transformation of language education, promote European values of inclusion and diversity, and contribute to the development of digital citizenship and democratic participation.
All resources will be made freely available in multiple languages, ensuring accessibility and sustainability beyond the project’s duration. CLEVER AI will also leverage a strong network of associated partners for broad dissemination and impact at local, national and European levels.
