FESR - Digital framework for sustainability and circular economy in the building life cycle

DESCRIBE develops an integrated digital framework to promote the sustainability and circularity of buildings throughout their entire life cycle. The project combines Field2BIM technologies, photogrammetry, and advanced monitoring systems to acquire accurate data on existing buildings and their performance, transforming it into detailed and constantly updated BIM models.

Thanks to in-depth knowledge of the actual state of buildings, DESCRIBE supports decision-making processes regarding renovation, energy efficiency, structural consolidation, or selective demolition through the development of a decision support system. This system integrates dynamic comparative assessments of environmental impacts, costs, and implications throughout the possible life cycles of components and buildings, offering clear analyses and transparent comparisons between alternative intervention scenarios.

The framework also includes operational guidelines for reuse, recycling, and disassembly strategies, in line with the 9R principles of the circular economy. The methodology is tested and validated on a real case study, ensuring scientific soundness and practical applicability in the construction sector.

The project involves research institutes, companies, and design and engineering studios in South Tyrol, contributing to the digital transformation of the sector towards more circular construction practices with reduced environmental impact. DESCRIBE aims to extend the useful life of buildings through retrofitting and, when this is not technically or economically sustainable, to reduce waste production through selective demolition processes that favor the recovery and reuse of materials.
