FusionGrant ECO-AIR: Evaluation of volatile organic COmpounds in prefAbricated Indoor Residences
People spend 90% of their time in closed (indoor) spaces, such as homes, offices or schools, where they are exposed to environmental pollutants that can cause adverse health effects, ranging from mild to serious illnesses. Despite the central role of indoor environments in assessing an individual's overall exposure to environmental pollution, the levels of contaminants detected in confined spaces are still poorly studied, and an unambiguous standard defining the characteristics of healthy indoor air quality is still lacking. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are one of the classes of pollutants most present in indoor spaces, as they are mainly emitted by building materials and furniture. This project aims to assess VOC emissions from materials used in the construction of prefabricated buildings, as well as their impact on occupants' health, through measurements in specialised laboratories and in situ monitoring campaigns.
