Fusion Grant FlexPowerAI - Development of an artificial intelligence tool for the optimized integration of renewables into the electricity market
The project FlexPowerAI aims to develop an innovative digital solution (FlexPowerAI tool) to enhance the integration of renewable energy sources (RES) into the Italian electricity market. By leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Deep Learning (DL) algorithms, the project proposes the estimation of an advanced predictive and prescriptive model capable of monitoring and forecasting trading volumes, electricity demand, and market prices (spot and forward). The tool will also analyse energy flows, particularly in contexts with a high share of RES generation—such as hydropower, wind, and solar—providing actionable insights to optimize trading strategies for its users. Overall, the project aims to accelerate the decarbonization of the power system, leveraging the flexibility of pumped-storage hydropower plants to enhance market efficiency and the sustainability of the power system. Additionally, the tool will enable its users to assess grid stability, helping to reduce bottlenecks, facilitate inter-zonal and cross-border energy exchanges, and optimize the overall energy balance. In doing so, FlexPowerAI will contribute to a more flexible and resilient electricity market, addressing the challenges posed by the increasing penetration and volatility of RES.
