Habi(Li)ter - Co-defining the habitability of Lorraine under climate change and future multi-risk conditions

The Habi(Li)ter project is funded by the Lorraine University of Excellence as part of the IMPACT initiative "EPHemeris - Earth and Planet Habitability”. It started in October 2024 and will last for 24 months. It aims to understand how climate change and the resulting interacting risks will impact the future habitability of Lorraine for its human populations.

This will be achieved through bottom-up transdisciplinary approaches that incorporate values, knowledge, expertise, and insights from both academic and non-academic sources.

Through the integration of data-driven models and stakeholder insights, the project will develop an advanced conceptual framework to understand the complex interplay between climate drivers, socio-economic factors, and multi-hazard risks in the region with a focus on their implications for the habitability of human populations and the functioning of ecosystems. 
The project is interdisciplinary, integrating perspectives from disaster risk management, ecology, geography, and social sciences, among others. The case study area will be located in the Vosges Massif, where the impacts of climate change are significantly affecting habitability and sustainable development.

Within the Habi(Li)ter project, Eurac will contribute to the development and application of Impact Chains and System Dynamics Models to investigate complex multi-risk conditions and empower local communities to navigate interacting climate risks. Overall, within the Habi(Li)ter project Eurac will consolidate and improve methodologies to investigate multi-risk conditions to support climate adaptation of mountain communities

Within the Habi(Li)ter project, Eurac will provide support for the development of all project activities and work packages ranging from the supervision to develop (i) participatory approaches to map and collect the main local stakeholders opinion on habitability and risks, co-describe future scenarios of climate and socio-economic developments, (iii) investigate complex multi-risk dynamics in the Lorraine region through data-driven and participatory activities, (iv) evaluate present and future habitability conditions to identify adaptation strategies and inform local decision-making.

The project has recently started and most of the activities have been focusing on mapping of the most relevant local stakeholders, data collection on landscape and hydrological data as well as desk-based review of existing knowledge on past extreme conditions and adaptation strategies.
