Empowering Applied Biomedical Research in South Tyrol: Enhancing Laboratory Capacities for the Development of Innovative Human Cell Models and Services

The CELLMED project aims to expand the laboratory capacity of Eurac Research's Institute of Biomedicine by implementing advanced human cell models and high-throughput technologies, including a cutting-edge imaging platform for the characterization of human cell models. The project will strengthen applied biomedical research in South Tyrol by enabling the development and detailed characterisation of innovative human cell models both for research projects and for the provision of services to academic and industrial partners.

CELLMED will focus on neuronal cell models in both 2D and 3D, including organoids and microphysiological systems, which currently represent the most advanced tools for developing precision medicine approaches and implementing individualised therapy concepts. The project will further facilitate detailed cell characterization, including the assessment of intracellular organelles and neuronal activity, and enable the development of complex biologically relevant cellular assays for compound screenings. Advanced cellular models, coupled with the cellular assays, will  provide a unique opportunity to study disease mechanisms, test therapeutic interventions, and generate high translational value for academic and industrial collaborations.

Overall, CELLMED aims to utilise existing know-how to increase the translational value of biomedical research with the aim of improving the health of the population. The project will enable South Tyrol to play a pioneering role in the field of biomedicine and precision health, in line with the RIS3 strategy of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano. The project is also in line with the NOI Techpark strategy, which includes the ‘Omics and Precision Health’ pillar within the ‘Food and Health’ sector.
