Biodiversity is not only the variety of all life on earth from ecosystems and species to agricultural varieties and soil microorganisms, it is also the source of the essential resources and ecosystem functions that sustain life on our planet. Biodiversity loss, together with climate change and pollution, reinforce each other exacerbating damage to the environment and human health and wellbeing. This [triple planetary crisis](https://www.unep.org/resources/making-peace-nature) is inextricably linked to human activity.

The value of alpine summer pastures is manifold. They are production facilities for agricultural products, and they make an important contribution to local tourism. But these pastures also have an important ecological value which must be maintained and fostered during times of severe biodiversity losses worldwide. Here, the work of the shepherdesses and shepherds plays a key role, as they ensure guided pasture grazing and thus significantly contribute to preserve and maintain the landscape.

Weiden sind von Menschen in Zusammenarbeit mit Tieren gestaltete Kulturlandschaften. Ihre Beschaffenheit hängt von dem Zusammenwirken zwischen Tieren, Pflanzen und Menschen ab. Am Zustand von Weidelandschaften lässt sich ablesen, wie dieses Zusammenwirken aussieht. Daher lohnt es sich, der Aufforderung von Anne Tsing nachzukommen, die in Bezug auf Pilzgeflechte schreibt:

Schafe beeinflussen die Beschaffenheit von Weiden.
