Public lecture: Towards structural and technological change

Bartosz Stefan Michalski holds a PhD in Economics (2005) from the University of Economics, Wrocław, Poland. As Associate Professor at the Institute of International Studies, he focuses his research on international political economy, global and regional studies. In his public lecture, our Stiftung Südtiroler Sparkasse Global Fellow will address the question of what measures states such as the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia are taking with regard to technology and innovation and how they are shaping their trade relations.

The prospects for economic growth and development depend more and more heavily on technological factors, while the contemporary division of production within global value chains poses distinct challenges for semi-peripheral countries. This public lecture aims to address some typical patterns of so-called dependent market economies and provide a comparative analysis of Visegrád countries (V4; Czechia, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia).
First, we will place a major emphasis on exploring directions of technological change, revealed in the structure of their exports, their likely causes, and consequences.
Second, it is also of particular importance to take under scrutiny V4 trade relations with Germany, their largest partner, and determine their impact on structural change and economic complexity.
Third, since this research is positioned in an interdisciplinary methodological perspective, merging critical security studies, international political economy, international economics, and new public governance, results and recommendations can trigger a fruitful debate and offer new insights on how to come up with strategic means for V4 public policies targeted at industrial upgrading and indigenous innovations.
