EUREC College of Members Meeting in Brussels

EUREC will host its College of Members meeting on 3-4 December 2025 in Brussels, with the Institute for Renewable Energy's Wolfram Sparber chairing the event in his role as EUREC President. The meeting will take place at the Representation of the European Region Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino.

The two-day gathering brings together Europe's leading renewable energy research centers for crucial exchanges with the European Commission on the future direction of EU energy and innovation policy. With renewable energy legislation set to be revised in Q3 2026, the timing of these discussions is particularly significant for shaping the regulatory framework that will govern the sector in the coming years.

Key Topics on the Agenda

Day one will feature high-level discussions with DG Energy on upcoming legislative initiatives for renewable energy and energy efficiency frameworks, including potential changes to provisions for "innovative renewables" under the revised Renewable Energy Directive. The meeting will also address "made-in-Europe" provisions expected in the Industrial Accelerator Act, examining how to define and support genuinely European clean energy manufacturing.

Day two focuses on the future of EU research funding, with presentations from DG Research on Horizon Europe 2028-2034 and its interaction with the proposed European Competitiveness Fund. With 25 billion EUR earmarked for renewable energy research over seven years, understanding how these funding instruments will work together is crucial for Europe's research community.

EUREC's Role in European Energy Policy

As President of EUREC, Wolfram Sparber leads a network of over 50 research centers across Europe dedicated to renewable energy innovation. The association serves as a key bridge between the research community and EU policymakers, ensuring that evidence-based insights inform energy transition strategies.

The Brussels meeting reflects EUREC's active engagement with European institutions and its role in shaping frameworks like the Strategic Energy Technology (SET) Plan, which coordinates EU energy research and innovation efforts. Sparber is going also to bring some comments on the last SET PLAN Conference 2025, which took place this month the last 4 and 5 November.
