Bio-insulation scaleup

EIT CC - Bio-insulation scaleup

The project aims to advance the mycelium‑based insulation material from TRL 6 to TRL 8–9 through rigorous performance validation and scale‑up activities. The project builds on results from a real‑environment pilot installation, monitored with more than 80 sensors to benchmark thermal, hygric, and fire‑performance characteristics against mineral wool and wood‑based reference materials.

The project targets market‑readiness by enabling first commercial deployments, increasing production capacity beyond 50 m³ per month, and securing 1–2 additional patents related to material formulation and manufacturing processes. The project also introduces the product to private end users and supports initial revenue generation.

The project develops carbon‑negative insulation panels produced by upcycling lignocellulosic residues and using mycelium as a natural binder, resulting in a cost‑efficient, fire‑resistant solution suitable for renovation and new construction applications and aligned with EU Green Deal and Renovation Wave objectives.

The project is supported by Eurac Research, which contributes internationally recognised expertise in building‑physics testing, performance modelling, and the assessment of innovative building materials. Eurac’s role ensures robust experimental validation, improved material optimisation, and scientific credibility for the product’s market introduction.
