Research area for transdisciplinary local and regional planning
The acute shortage of trained specialists in the public and private sectors who think and act in a networked way shows the need to develop a specialised research area that promotes academic exchange and interdisciplinary cooperation. The scientific examination of sustainable (inter-municipal) issues of local/spatial development should help the region to master real challenges in social, ecological, political and economic issues in a realisation-oriented manner. In this way, the municipalities are supported professionally in order to maintain the high quality of life in South Tyrol. This is because they are required to make their contribution to the implementation of the climate plan and to draw up community development programmes as part of citizen participation processes. In addition, the provincial strategy plan is the new territorial guideline. Discussions with stakeholders and institutions from the field show that the municipalities should be supported in the corresponding implementation steps.
FORort aims to create a dynamic environment for experimentation and research and to foster a culture of continuous learning. This benefits the academic landscape as well as practice-orientated solutions for decision-makers and local interest groups. The research area should act as an interface between administration, research, the private sector and the population.
The research area "FORort" for transdisciplinary local and regional planning will serve as a catalyst to address the above-mentioned challenges and train a new generation of planners to research and tackle real-world problems. FORort is aimed at technical staff and young scientists, including architects, landscape architects, urban and spatial planners, geographers, sociologists, anthropologists and designers. They are interested in post-doctoral training focussing on transdisciplinary practice and spatial transformations in spatial and landscape planning and architecture.
On the one hand, FORort encompasses the planning, methodological and spatial examination of topics relating to sustainable urban development, which is based on the 11th SDG, Sustainable Cities and Communities, among others. On the other hand, it is about the concrete transfer of competences and the acquisition of disciplinary and, above all, interdisciplinary skills. This is to be achieved through the postgraduate, practice-orientated research area: Expertise and perspectives from various disciplines are brought together with partner institutions in order to develop future-oriented solutions and approaches for the special spatial and planning needs of municipalities. Synergies should be sought with universities that offer degree programmes in this area.
