TRANSFOrm

Back to the future: Traditional agroforestry systems as NbS to face multiple societal challenges

The TRANSFOrm project aims to revitalise traditional agroforestry systems (TAS) as nature-based solutions (NbS) to address critical societal challenges such as biodiversity loss, climate change, and sustainable food production in the Euro-Mediterranean region. By integrating agricultural and forestry practices, TAS offer diverse ecological, economic and cultural benefits, including carbon sequestration, soil enrichment, and the preservation of rural heritage.

The project will conduct inter- and transdisciplinary research across different case studies (i.e., orchard meadows, dehesas and montados), focusing on the ecological, social, and economic values of TAS. Key objectives include identifying the benefits of TAS, assessing their effectiveness in providing ecosystem services, and exploring opportunities for scaling-up these practices to larger landscapes. TRANSFOrm will engage stakeholders through participatory processes from the onset of the project to ensure the practical application of research findings and to promote policy recommendations.
