I am a social scientist researching migration and local development in rural and mountain contexts.

Research interests

Migration governance and local integration processes
Social and solidarity economy initiatives in rural and mountain areas
Access to housing and employment for migrants
Intersectional and decolonial approaches in research
Post-socialist contexts, with a focus on the Western Balkans

I work at Eurac Research at the Institute for Regional Development. My research combines applied and conceptual perspectives, with experience in numerous projects on mobility and access to resources in both local and European contexts.

I apply intersectional and decolonial perspectives to critically reflect on research methods and positionalities. Beyond my current focus on Alpine regions, I have developed expertise on the Western Balkans through collaborations with the European Regional Master in Democracy and Human Rights in Southeast Europe (ERMA) in Sarajevo and with Osservatorio Balcani Caucaso Transeuropa.

Drawing on findings from the monitoring of two European Social Fund-funded projects
supporting migrants’ access to housing in South Tyrol, Northern Italy, this article examines
the interaction between the local housing and welfare system on the one hand and migrants’
housing pathways on the other. Based on qualitative and quantitative data collected during
this local case study, the article discusses the potential and limitations of socially innovative
interventions to improve migrants’ access to housing. The findings suggest that barriers to
housing access due to the residual (social) rental sector and discriminatory practices in the
housing market have a significant impact on migrants’ welfare.

Gli effetti del volontariato sul senso di appartenenza di giovani immigrati: una prospettiva europea

Questo contributo esamina gli effetti del volontariato su giovani immigrati in sei paesi europei, concentrandosi sui cambiamenti occorsi dopo un anno di coinvolgimento volontario nel loro senso di appartenenza e nei legami con il luogo di residenza. Lo studio ha dato ampio spazio all'auto-percezione dei volontari, rilevata attraverso metodi qualitativi, ricorrendo all'uso di un "control group".

L'ipotesi - che l'esperienza potesse rafforzare il senso di appartenenza con intensità variabile a seconda del background migratorio del partecipante - è stata in parte confermata. L'analisi mostra variazioni apprezzabili in particolare tra i giovani con background migratorio, per chi si è impegnato per più tempo, e tra i giovani con precedente esperienza di volontariato, ad indicare l'importanza di contesti di volontariato che sostengano il capitale sociale di tipo "bridging".

The report on the database on spatial features and distribution of Third Country Nationals is part of the MATILDE deliverable 2.2. The report describes the collection, harmonization and processing of data, as well as the creation and structure of the geographical and table database. They were needed to reach a harmonization for the comparability of the collected data to elaborate a classification of the MATILDE regions based on spatial specificities and Third Country Nationals distribution.

Forced Migration to Mountain Regions: Empirical Evidence from Two Reception Projects in the Italian Alps

Following the Italian government’s strategy relocating asylum seekers and refugees outside urban centers, by 2016 the presence of asylum seekers became distinctly noticeable in the Italian Alps. This contributes to a substantial transformation of Alpine communities. As the integration of refugees depends on several dimensions, mountain relocation offers both benefits and restrictions: Physical constrains may obstruct integration, but at the same time specific mountain features can create opportunities for innovation and community development that support socio-economic and cultural integration. This paper provides empirical evidence that contributes to the study of the dimensions that influence refugees’ chances of inclusion and integration in mountain areas. It uses a case-study approach to compare two reception projects in the Italian Alps, i.e., Welcoming Village (Pettinengo, Piedmont) and Residence Le Baite (Montecampione, Lombardy). It adopts a territorial perspective to answer three research questions: Which strategies have been enacted by local organizations? Which territorial resources have been mobilized in reception projects? What are the outcomes of reception initiatives for newcomers and local communities? Our hypothesis is that the interplay between structural elements and the agency of local actors determines the framework for the integration and outcomes of reception projects for both newcomers and local communities.

The Impact of Social and Economic Policies on Migrants in Europe: MATILDE Deliverable 3.1 Chapter Italy

This report presents the impact assessments of a range of policies on migrants’ interaction with the social and economic structure of the remote and rural areas in the MATILDE countries – Austria, Bulgaria, Finland, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and in the United Kingdom.
The section on Italy includes a systematic gathering of information on existing policies that have a direct/indirect impact on migrants’ interaction with the social-economic structure of remote and rural areas. It then a review on the existing literature that has focused on migrants’ impact in rural and remote areas of Italy. The report then presents an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the policies and services explored through semi-structured interviews. Finally, the report includes two separate conclusions, on the migrants’ impact on the country's economic and social dimensions. This final section also includes an inventory of good practices.

This report presents the conceptual framework developed in the H2020 MATILDE project to analyze international migration processes towards rural and mountain areas. The publication's specific focus is on transdisciplinary concepts that are mobilized to examine the interactions of Third Country Nationals with local structures, institutions, and communities in this type of region.

The report begins by providing working definitions of Third Country Nationals (TCNs), rural and mountain areas, as well as territory. It then moves on to elaborate conceptual frameworks relating to the specific interactions between newcomers and local communities in rural and mountain areas. The new mobilities paradigm is presented as an adequate
concept to address both the local and regional variety of migration phenomena and related impacts. Processes of staying and attachment, commonly acknowledged as a prerequisite for evoking changes and impacts, are also elaborated. Migrants’ interactions with places are pointed out, whilst the agency of migrants is highlighted as crucial in this context, along with migration governance.

This report also provides an overview of concepts on the settlement of migrants and the individual’s strife for participating in the economic, social, cultural, and political life of the host society. It subsequently introduces the migration-development nexus, both in conceptual terms and its manifestation in current European rural development policies. Finally, an outlook on the measurement of social, economic, and territorial impact, is given.

Adopting a transdisciplinary approach, the report combines insights from the disciplines of migration studies, sociology, geography, and rural studies.

MATILDE Deliverable 2.2, “Database on spatial features and distribution of Third Country Nationals” (TCNs) is created by Eurac Research and FAU in Task 2.1 by combining spatial features and development characteristics of MATILDE regions. The database collects indicators of TCNs as well as three dimensions of spatial features: territorial dimension, socioeconomic dimension, and the infrastructure development dimension. The territorial dimension on the one hand includes data from existing analysis at the European level on regional typologies. On the other hand, it provides land cover data. The socioeconomic dimension includes demographic data on population size, composition, and population change, as well as economic data on productivity, labor market, risk of poverty, and education. The infrastructural dimension provides data to access Services of General Interest (SGI).

The database is complemented by the rich set of metadata and by the related report that provides detailed information on each dimension and indicator included in the database.
