“Goodbye Glaciers. Forever?”

22 photographic comparisons of glaciers in Trentino, South Tyrol, and Austria tell the story of climate change. After its first stop at the MUSE in Trento, the traveling photo exhibition “Goodbye Glaciers. Forever?” will arrives in Bolzano from 1-30 August and will be open to the public at the Galleria Civica/Stadtgalerie  in Piazza Domenicani/ Dominikanerplatz.

The exhibition offers a visual and scientific narrative of the glacial retreat over the last 160 years, brought to life through photographic comparisons between historical and contemporary images, as well as a journey that recounts for the first time the Alpine glacial heritage and the glaciological monitoring activities carried out in the Euregio area.

Over the last 200 years, Alpine glaciers have lost an average of 70 percent of their surface area. Estimates indicate that by the end of the century, the fate of many glaciers is sealed. Those above 3,500 meters are likely to endure, but most are destined to disappear within the next few decades.

The exhibition, which was first held in 2019, has been updated and enriched with new content to mark the International Year of Glacier Conservation.

The initiative is the result of collaboration between the Civil Protection Agency of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, MUSE – Science Museum of Trento, Eurac Research, the University of Innsbruck, and the Austrian Alpine Club.
