Measuring hygrothermal properties of innovative materials
Researchers at Eurac Research are experimenting with innovative solutions for the internal insulation of buildings with four partner companies as part of the FESR InRenova project.
This approach is useful for improving energy efficiency in historic centres and existing buildings, where it is often not possible to apply external insulation.
The key materials for these solutions have already arrived at Eurac Research's Hygrothermal Testing Lab, and experimental activities have begun.
The products being tested are:
- A variable hygrometry membrane (RIWEGA)
- Hemp lime blocks (Schönthaler)
- A hemp fibre insulation panel (Naturalia Bau)
A thermal insulation plaster based on natural hydraulic lime NHL (Röfix)
The Hygrothermal Testing Lab at Eurac Research studies the properties of individual materials and their performance: the process allows us to move from laboratory measurements at the material level to the modelling of the design solution in dynamic hygrothermal software and hygrothermal simulations in realistic contexts.
In the context of the InRenova project, this information is used to design internal insulation measures using reliable methods. The aim is to create a useful guide for designers and companies who want to apply insulation solutions to increase the energy efficiency of buildings while preventing damage from moisture.
The guides will be produced over the next year and will be an output of the InRenova project.
