Sustainable, resilient and comfortable buildings

We deliver solutions for the design, renovation and management of new and existing buildings, supporting the transition to resilient, resource‑efficient and comfortable spaces. Our work combines human‑centred, climate‑responsive, low‑carbon and circular approaches to reduce energy use and environmental impact, while supporting occupant health, flexibility and efficient building operation.

Who we work with

Our services are provided to a wide range of stakeholders in the construction sector, including construction companies, manufacturers of building envelope and smart technologies, architects and engineers, design firms, property owners and managers, facility managers, and public authorities.

We support organisations aiming to improve the performance, comfort and environmental quality of residential, educational, service and workplace buildings.

Solutions for climate-responsive buildings

We support companies and design teams in the development, validation and deployment of climate‑responsive building solutions. Our services address both energy performance and occupant comfort, integrating passive and hybrid strategies across building systems.

What we offer

  • Integrated performance analysis and optimisation: combined modelling and experimental analysis of thermal behaviour, airflow and indoor air quality to evaluate passive and hybrid strategies such as natural ventilation, shading and thermal mass, ensuring reliable performance across different climates and use conditions.

  • Overheating risk assessment: evaluation of overheating risk under current and future climate scenarios, supporting the design of solutions that maintain comfort while reducing cooling demand.

  • Design tools for climate‑responsive buildings: development and application of methods and tools based on building energy simulation and standards, supporting early‑stage design and product development for ventilation performance, comfort and indoor air quality.

  • Technology development and validation support: support to manufacturers across the innovation chain, from concept and prototyping to laboratory characterisation and in‑use validation, combining simulations, testing and monitored data.

  • Laboratory testing and characterisation: use of dedicated facilities to assess the functional performance of ventilation components and systems, providing independent and reliable performance data.

  • Occupant‑centred evaluation: collection and analysis of occupant needs, preferences and behaviour through surveys, interviews and monitoring, informing design and verifying real performance in use.

Health and quality of indoor environments

We support companies in the development and improvement of products and services for healthy, comfortable and human‑centred indoor environments, considering both physical conditions and user perception.

What we offer

  • Post‑occupancy evaluation (POE): standardised and GDPR‑compliant monitoring and surveys in occupied buildings, combining long‑term measurements (e.g. temperature, CO₂, pollutants) with user feedback on comfort, health and preferences.

  • Emissions measurements and IAQ sensor evaluation: testing of material emissions (VOC) under standard and non‑standard conditions, and evaluation of indoor air quality sensors through controlled laboratory experiments.

  • Development and validation support: laboratory and field studies with human participants and breathing thermal manikins to enable comparable and repeatable evaluation of building technologies and indoor environments.

  • Indoor environmental modelling: computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to assess airflow patterns and detailed indoor conditions, identifying specific issues (e.g. draughts) and opportunities (e.g. personalised ventilation).

  • Training and education: delivery of knowledge through workshops, lectures and training modules for professionals and students.

Adaptable and circular building envelope technologies

Credit: Eurac Research | Ludovica Galeazzi

We support companies in the development, validation and deployment of façade and building envelope solutions, addressing performance, resource efficiency and decarbonisation across the full development process.

What we offer

  • Tools for performance‑based façade design and decision support: development and application of tools to compare façade solutions and assess performance at component, system and building level.

  • Performance‑based development and validation of envelope technologies: support across the full innovation chain, combining simulation, laboratory testing and monitored data to verify performance under real conditions.

  • Development of intelligent façade operation strategies: design and validation of control approaches to optimise façade behaviour, improve comfort and reduce operational energy use.

  • Support for industrialised and adaptable façade solutions: technical support for prefabricated and plug‑and‑play envelope systems, addressing integration, scalability and constructability.

  • Resource efficiency and life‑cycle assessment (LCA & LCC): evaluation of environmental and economic performance over the full life cycle, including circularity, durability and residual value.

  • Access to specialised façade laboratories and methods: testing and characterisation of façade systems to assess performance, durability and integration, supporting product development and market deployment.

AI‑driven tools and services for building performance and energy management
