To counteract climate change, energy supplies must become CO₂-neutral as quickly as possible. We are involved in this transformation at all levels, we collaborate with industry partners on technological innovations and advise decision-makers on setting the course for the transformation of entire systems.
Institute for Renewable Energy
Cross-sectoral energy systems are key to an environmentally sound future - only by closely integrating electricity, heat and mobility can energy from renewable sources be optimally used and incentives for accelerating the uptake of sustainable energy consumption created. This includes using electricity generated from hydro, wind or solar power as well to generate heat via heat pumps or to operate electric -vehicles
Everything is interconnected - which is why a team of international experts from a wide variety of backgrounds work together at our institute. Transformation means not only moving away from fossil sources, but also reducing consumption. To achieve this, we are working with industry partners, to improve the energy efficiency of products and develop intelligent solutions for energy refurbishment of historical and recent buildings in international research projects as well as working with local administrations to create Smart Cities.
We have the scientific know-how and the infrastructure to work intensively on individual technologies. These can include heat pumps, which play a central role in drastically reducing CO₂ emissions for heating or photovoltaics. We have specialized laboratories for both areas, as well as for the building and e-mobility sector and our simulation model for entire energy systems enables regions or countries to project the economically most viable way to achieve their climate targets.
